Helix Installation

Installing the Helix PHP Framework is a simple process.  Make sure your system meets the following requirements:

The easiest way to meet all of the requirements is to install Zend Server.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these step-by-step instructions to get Helix up and running on your server.  After installing Helix, you can edit the configuration in the etc/site.config.php and etc/server.config.php files for your site.

  1. Download Helix from https://sourceforge.net/projects/helix/files/latest.
  2. Unzip Helix and move the helix folder to the web root of your Apache web server.
  3. Open a browser and go to the Helix setup page at http://[hostname]/helix/setup.php
    1. Replace [hostname] with localhost if you are installing on your personal computer, or replace with your domain name (like www.example.com) if installing on a live web server.
  4. Follow the directions on the setup page and enter all of the required information.
    1. The setup will create a new database, so you need to enter a database user that has database create permissions.
    2. If you are installing Helix in a shared hosting environment, you may not have database create permissions. In this case, please create a new database first through your hosting account control panel, and then enter the database name on the setup page.
  5. Click the "Install Helix" button and you're done!

Moving A Helix Site To The Top Of A Domain

These instructions are optional.  By default, your Helix site will be available to you at a URL that points to the Helix sites directory -- like http://www.example.com/helix/sites/mysite  If you want to move the site to the top of your domain so that it is available when you go to http://www.example.com, then you just need to use the .htaccess file provided with Helix.

Follow the steps below to move your site to the top of a domain:

  1. Copy the Helix/.htaccess-webroot file into the web root of your web server.
    1. The web root should be one directory above the main Helix folder
  2. Rename the file to .htaccess
  3. Open the file and change the last line -- replace MAINSITE with the name of your site folder.
